The artist, Bethany Marie, sketched Gunter's likeness from the book covers. She expertly added Gunter's K-9 police vest and incorporated his missing ear. 

Bethany created the pawprint on the back with the help of an actual German Shepherd, who allowed her to use his paw for the image.
